Places of Remembrance - Orte des Erinnerns.
|
80 brightly printed signs are put up on lampposts, depicting colorful images on the one side and condensed versions of anti-Jewish Nazi rules passed between 1933 and 1945 on the reverse side. Together, the words and images force passers-by to remember the almost-forgotten history of this neighborhood, where Albert Einstein once lived. Dispersed throughout the area the memorial becomes a metaphor of the daily deprivation of rights and humiliation of Jews during the Nazi era. |

Discussion:
- "The passage of time in no way diminishes the crimes."
- "Sorry, but it's too late. I do not see the point in prosecuting 98 year old men who played no major role in the Holocaust. The leaders are long since dead. Time for these prosecutions to stop."
Two films, The train (1964) and Monuments Men (2014), present this dilemma. Both of them are based on real facts that happened during World War II.

2'10 - 4'20.
Analyze the last scene of The train: the main character Labiche, a french Resistence leader, has achived to stop the train loaded with valuables works of art. Von Waldheim remains behind with the abandoned train. Crates are strewn everywhere between the tracks and the road, labeled with the names of famous artists. Labiche appears and the colonel castigates him for having no real interest in the art he has saved: Labiche! Here's your prize, Labiche. Some of the greatest paintings in the world. Does it please you, Labiche? You feel a sense of excitement at just being near them? A painting means as much to you as a string of pearls to an ape. You won by sheer luck. You stopped me without knowing what you were doing or why. You are nothing, Labiche. A lump of flesh. The paintings are mine. They always will be. Beauty belongs to the man who can appreciate it. They will always belong to me, or a man like me. Now, this minute, you couldn't tell me why you did what you did. |
